Who keeps score, and how to switch phones
Quick answer
One phone per team enters the scores. After you type your team code, tap your name under 'Who's keeping score for your team?' Everyone else can follow along on their own phone. To switch, open the code on the new phone and tap 'That's not right — I need to take over'.

Overview
In a scramble, the whole team shares one scorecard, so one person enters the scores. ScrambleSync calls that person the score keeper. Everyone else on the team can open the same code and watch the card update, but their phones can't change a score. The score keeper also reviews and signs the card at the end of the round.
Who this is for
Golfers in a team format. If you play best-ball or individual with your own personal code, you don't pick a score keeper because you score your own card.
Pick the score keeper
Enter your team code
Open scramblesync.com/play and type the code from your cart sign. See Join your team with a code if you need help with that part.
Tap your name
You'll see 'Who's keeping score for your team?' with a list of your teammates. Tap your own name if you're the one entering scores. Only one person needs to do this.
Everyone else taps the follow-along button
Teammates tap 'I'm just following along — don't assign me as score keeper'. Their scorecard shows the scores as they come in, with the note 'You're following along. Only the score keeper enters scores.'
Take over from another phone
Use this when the score keeper's battery dies, they hand the job to someone else, or the wrong person was picked. You don't need the other person's permission.
Open the code on the phone that will keep score
Go to scramblesync.com/play and enter the team code. You'll see '<name> is already keeping score for this team.'
Tap 'That's not right — I need to take over'
You'll see 'Take over scoring from <name>?' and the message 'You'll be the only one who can enter scores. <name> will follow along instead.'
Tap 'Take over as' and your name
There's one 'Take over as' button for each teammate. Pick your own name. If you change your mind, tap Cancel.
Once you've taken over, your phone is the only one that can enter scores. The old score keeper's phone updates the next time it gets in touch with ScrambleSync and shows '<name> is keeping score now. You can follow along.' From then on it's view-only.
Change the name on the phone you're using
On the score keeper's phone, the keeper's name appears at the top of the scorecard (some screens show a Change link next to it). Tap it to open the same take-over screen, then follow the steps above to pick a different name. Tap 'Back to scoring' if you opened it by mistake. The name at the top isn't tappable once the card has been signed.
Tips
- Agree on the score keeper before the first tee so you don't have two people tapping 'keeping score'.
- Only tap 'I'm just following along' if you really don't plan to score. A phone that chose it has no keeper name at the top of the card to tap.
- Only the score keeper's phone shares the team's position for the organizer's live course map.
- If the score keeper's phone dies, the new keeper sees the scores that already reached ScrambleSync on the same card. A score that was still waiting to send on the dead phone may need to be entered again.
Troubleshooting
| If you see this | Try this |
|---|---|
| '<name> is already keeping score for this team.' | Someone on your team already picked themselves. Follow along, or tap 'That's not right — I need to take over' if you need to be the score keeper. |
| 'Couldn't set the score keeper — check your signal and try again.' | Your phone couldn't reach ScrambleSync. Move to where you have a signal and tap your name again. |
| 'You're following along. Only the score keeper enters scores.' | This phone isn't the score keeper. Take over from the code screen if you should be. |
| '<name> is keeping score now. You can follow along.' | Someone else on your team took over. If that wasn't meant to happen, have the right person take over again from their phone. |
Frequently asked questions
Can two phones enter scores for the same team?
No. One phone at a time is the score keeper. When someone takes over, the old phone becomes view-only.
Do I have to be the one who signs the card?
The screen says the score keeper verifies and signs the card at the end of the round. See Signing your card for the steps.
My teammate's phone died. What do I do?
Open scramblesync.com/play on your phone, enter the team code, and tap 'That's not right — I need to take over'. Then tap 'Take over as' and your name.
Does the other person have to say yes?
No. Taking over works right away, and the old phone switches to follow-along mode.
